Olene
Feminine · “ancestor”
Olene is most likely a Norwegian woman made from a Norwegian man. Norway built women's names by taking a man's name and adding an ending, and the commonest man's name in the country produced Oline, which crossed the Atlantic with the emigration and was respelled by American clerks who had never seen it.

The story of Olene
Norway had no fixed surnames until surprisingly late. A man was his father's son and a woman her father's daughter, so the same family produced Olsen and Olsdatter in one generation and Hansen and Hansdatter in the next, and nothing carried down the line. The law that ended it was passed in 1923, which is well within living memory when it was made: families had to choose a surname and keep it, and many took the name of the farm they lived on. The emigrants had left before that, which is why Norwegian-American surnames are frozen patronymics from the nineteenth century and Norwegian ones frequently are not.

ancestor
If the source is the Norwegian name, the parent is a Norse compound generally read as ancestor or forefather, and the reading is reasonably secure. If the source is something else — a respelling of another name, or an American formation on a common ending — no reading applies. The route cannot be established from the spelling alone.
How the name formed
- A Norse man's name, the commonest in Norway
- A feminine built on it with an added ending
- Carried to America with the emigration
- Olene as an American respelling

Pronouncing Olene
oh-LEEN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. Norwegian says the original with three and sounds the final vowel, giving oo-LEE-neh, so the American form is a syllable shorter than the name it came from.

Fashion outlook
Olene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
