The story of Norvin
Old English wine meant a friend, and as a second element in names it was everywhere: Edwin is prosperity-friend, Godwin god-friend, Baldwin bold-friend, Aldwin old-friend, Corwin and Darwin are dear-friend, Alvin elf-friend, Selwyn hall-friend. The word disappeared from ordinary English entirely, replaced by friend, and survives only inside these names and in the archaic winsome. That is the usual fate of Old English name elements: the language moves on and the names freeze, so that a modern English speaker carries fossilized vocabulary without access to it. Norvin belongs to the same pattern, whether it was inherited or assembled in America on the model of the others, which the records cannot decide.

Norvin is most plausibly built from north and the Old English element wine, a friend, on the model of Edwin and Godwin, though it may be a modern American formation. The -win element is one of the most productive in Old English naming. The peak is 1918.

Line the two peaks up, and Royden's path sketches the road Norvin is walking now.
