The story of Noreen
Honora came to Ireland with the Normans and became one of the country's most-used women's names, shortened to Nóra and given the diminutive as Nóirín. English-speaking countries respelled it phonetically as Noreen in the nineteenth century, alongside Maureen, Kathleen and Doreen — a small group of -een names that briefly made the Irish diminutive fashionable. Noreen peaked in America in the late 1940s.

honor
Through Nóra, from Honora, from the Latin honor, 'honor' or 'esteem'. A second route reads Nora as a shortening of Eleanor, whose own origin is unrecovered. The Irish -ín ending adds affection rather than meaning. The Honora reading is the better supported in Ireland.

The Concetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Noreen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Concetta climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Concetta's path sketches the road Noreen is walking now.

The trade-off
- A genuine Irish name with a documented diminutive structure, not an English invention.
- The honor meaning is transparent and unambiguously good.
- Nora is available as a shorter form with real currency now.
- The parentage is split between Honora and Eleanor.
- It is firmly period-coded to the middle of the twentieth century.
