Nomi is what Israelis call a Naomi. Hebrew shortens names hard and adds nothing back, so a four-syllable biblical name becomes two crisp ones, and the short form has long since stopped needing the long one.

Where it comes from

The story of Nomi

Naomi is the mother-in-law in the book of Ruth, who asks on her return to Bethlehem to be called Mara — bitter — instead of Naomi, because of what has happened to her. Modern Hebrew took the name up as an ordinary one and shortened it the way it shortens everything: Nomi, Noa, Rina, Tali. The short forms in Israeli naming are frequently registered as the full legal name, which is not how English usually treats them, and Nomi reaches United States records both from Israeli families and as an English trimming.

Meaning

my pleasantness

Through Naomi, Hebrew No'omi, built on na'im, 'pleasant, agreeable', with a possessive ending. The reading is documented and undisputed. Nomi is the ordinary Israeli short form and carries the meaning unchanged; it is also a modern given name in its own right in Israel rather than only a nickname.

Nomi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2024, with 71 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, said correctly by English speakers at first sight.
  • Naomi stands behind it as a full formal name whenever one is wanted.
  • In genuine everyday use in Israel rather than being a made-up shortening.
What to consider
  • The stress falls differently in Hebrew and English, so the child will hear two versions.
  • It is a short form by origin and may read as informal on official documents.
  • Nomi, Noemi and Naomi all circulate and get confused in speech.
