Where it comes from

The story of Nicholai

Saint Nicholas of Myra was one of the most-venerated saints of both East and West, and the Orthodox world in particular made his name a fixture; two Russian emperors carried it, and Nikolai has been among the most-given Russian men's names for centuries. English took the Latin form Nicholas with its ch, which spells the Greek letter chi and has never been said as an English ch. When Russian names entered American use, families writing them from hearing produced Nikolai, Nicholai, Nikolay and Nicolai, mixing the two systems. Nicholai's best year in United States records is 2010, which is much more recent than the Russian migrations that first brought the name.

Meaning

victory of the people

From Greek Nikolaos, combining nike, victory, with laos, people. Russian Nikolai and English Nicholas are the same name; Russian writes the sound with a k as Cyrillic requires, and English keeps the Latin ch, which spells a Greek chi. The hybrid spelling here takes the English consonant and the Russian ending.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning and one of the great saints of both East and West.
  • Kolya, Nick and Niko are three short forms from three traditions.
  • Familiar by sound while being an uncommon spelling.
What to consider
  • Nikolai is the standard Russian transliteration and Nicholas the English form.
  • The spelling belongs to neither language.
  • The stress belongs at the end and English speakers will move it.
