Newt
Masculine · “a small amphibian”
The newt used to be an ewt. English speakers heard an ewt as a newt and moved the n across, which is the same accident that turned a napron into an apron in the other direction. Two words, one mistake, opposite results.

The story of Newt
False division works in both directions and English has examples of each: a napron became an apron, a nadder became an adder, a numpire became an umpire, while an ewt became a newt and an ekename became a nickname. The boundary between the article and the noun is inaudible, so speakers put it wherever they expect it. Meanwhile Newton, the new farmstead, is one of the most common English place names, and it gave a surname that American families used as a given name and clipped to Newt. Its best year on record is 1883.

a small amphibian; or a clip of Newton
The animal's name is Old English efeta, later ewt, which acquired an initial n by false division of an ewt. As a given name Newt is more often a clip of Newton, itself an English place name from Old English niwe, new, and tun, a farmstead. The two are unrelated except in spelling, and the nineteenth-century American Newt is almost always the second.
