The story of Nazar
The Arabic root n-z-r runs through words about seeing and looking, and nazar became a name across the Muslim world. In Turkey and Iran the same word names the belief that a look can carry harm and the blue glass eye sold everywhere to deflect it. Quite separately, the martyr Nazarius was venerated at Milan, and eastern churches took his name as Nazar, which has been ordinary in Armenia and Ukraine for centuries. American records carry both roads.

sight, a glance; or of Nazareth
Arabic nazar, from a root about looking, gives sight or vision and, in Turkish and Persian usage, the evil eye. Separately, Nazarius is a Latin name meaning of Nazareth, borne by an early martyr, which produced Nazar in the Armenian, Ukrainian and Russian churches. The two are unrelated.

The Estefan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nazar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Estefan climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Estefan's path sketches the road Nazar is walking now.
Nazar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Naz is a ready short form that works in every language the name belongs to.
- It is recognized across the Arab world, Turkey, Armenia and Ukraine at once.
- Five letters and two syllables make it quick to write anywhere.
- Its three histories are unrelated, so the meaning depends entirely on the family.
- In Turkish the word names the evil eye, which is a mixed association to carry.
- The stress moves between languages, giving the child two versions of his name.
