The story of Nataya
The Natya Shastra is attributed to a sage called Bharata and was compiled somewhere between two centuries before the common era and two after it. It is enormous and extremely practical: it specifies the shape of the theater, the hand gestures, the tuning of the instruments, and it sets out the theory of rasa — the emotional flavors a performance is meant to produce in an audience, of which it names eight. Classical Indian dance still teaches from it, and the word natya is in the name of the best-known form, Bharatanatyam. The same word traveled with Indian culture into Thailand, where Nataya is a woman's name.

dance, dramatic art
Sanskrit natya, dramatic art or dance, from a root meaning to act or to dance, is the likeliest source; the name is used in Thailand and India in that form. It may also be a respelling of Natalia or Nataliya, which come from Latin natalis and mean something entirely different.

The Lissett test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nataya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lissett climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lissett's path sketches the road Nataya is walking now.
Nataya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One of its possible sources is a documented Sanskrit word with a two-thousand-year-old text behind it.
- Three short forms, two of which are full names elsewhere.
- Three open syllables with no consonant cluster anywhere.
- The middle vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
- Nataya, Nataliya and Natalia are all in use and mean quite different things.
- Outside South Asian and Thai families the reference will need explaining.
