Alliah
Feminine · “high”
Arabic has a consonant English cannot write. It is made deep in the throat, it opens the name Ali, and the Latin alphabet has no letter for it — so transliterators use an apostrophe, or a doubled vowel, or nothing at all. That single missing letter is why this name has half a dozen spellings.

The story of Alliah
The consonant is called ayn, and it is one of the sounds that makes Arabic hard to write in English and English hard to speak in Arabic. It is not a vowel and it is not silent; it is a constriction of the throat that changes the word completely, and Arabic speakers hear its absence immediately. English has no way of representing it, so the conventions differ: some systems use a raised comma, some double the following vowel to suggest length, and ordinary American spelling simply drops it. What survives is a family of spellings — Aaliyah, Aliyah, Alia, Aliah, Alliah — that all point at one Arabic word and none of which contains its first sound.

high, exalted
The Arabic name behind this family is aliyah, the feminine of ali, high or exalted. Whether this particular spelling descends from it or was assembled to sound like it cannot be shown. A separate Hebrew word, aliyah, meaning ascent, is also given as a name and reaches the same sound from a different language.

About 1 girl in 311 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Alliah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Frannie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alliah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Frannie climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Frannie's path sketches the road Alliah is walking now.
Alliah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Both of its possible sources are documented names in living languages.
- Three open syllables with no cluster anywhere in them.
- Lia works as a short form and is a full name elsewhere.
- It is one letter away from a word sacred in Islam, and Muslim readers will notice the resemblance.
- At least five spellings compete for this sound, so it will be given letter by letter.
- The middle vowel is said two ways and the spelling settles neither.
