The story of Natalina
Christmas has generated names in every Catholic language: Natale and Natalia in Italy, Natividad and Noelia in Spain, Noël and Noëlle in France, Nadal in Catalonia, Bozhidar in the Slavic tradition. Behind all of them is the Roman habit of marking a dies natalis, a birthday, which the Church applied first to Christ and then, in a striking reversal, to martyrs — a saint's dies natalis is the day of death, understood as the birth into eternal life, which is why saints' feast days are usually death dates. Natalina reached America with Italian immigration, and the figures peak in 1919.
Meaning
Latin "of the birth" — born at Christmas
From natalis, relating to birth, from nasci, to be born — the root behind native, nation, nature and innate. Dies natalis Domini, the birthday of the Lord, shortened to natalis and then to Italian Natale, Christmas. Natalia is the feminine given to girls born at that season; Natalina is its Italian diminutive. Noël is the French development of the same Latin word.
