The story of Myriam
Miriam is a major figure in her own right in Exodus and Numbers, not simply a sister: she is called a prophet, she leads a song, and she challenges Moses and is punished for it. The name stayed in Jewish use continuously and reached Christian Europe separately, through Greek and Latin, as Maria. French kept both, and Myriam with a y has been the standard French spelling of the older form for a century, common in France, Belgium, Quebec and North Africa alike.

Not established
The Hebrew Miryam has no accepted etymology. Bitter, from mar, is the oldest guess and the weakest; rebellious, from marah, is another; the most respected modern reading takes it from Egyptian mry, beloved, since the name first appears in a family that had been living in Egypt. None has won.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Myriam went to 27 girls in 2025, but Miriam and Miryam are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,302, which makes it the 252nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,626 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,234 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 59,528 for Myriam itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Marisha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Myriam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marisha climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marisha's path sketches the road Myriam is walking now.

The trade-off
- It is the oldest form of the most-used women's name in the western world.
- It works in French, Hebrew, Spanish and German households with almost no adjustment.
- Its bearer in Exodus is a figure with real agency, which is worth having behind a name.
- Miriam is the standard English spelling and will be written instead.
- The French and English pronunciations differ by a whole syllable.
- Its meaning has never been settled, so a child looking it up will find several answers.
