Where it comes from

The story of Myrah

Myra appears in English poetry in the sixteenth century with no earlier trace, which points to invention — the period made classical-sounding names freely for pastoral verse. Myra in Lycia is where Saint Nicholas was bishop, and the two are probably unconnected. The name was well used in American records around 1880 and Myrah is a modern respelling.

Not established

Myra is generally credited to the poet Fulke Greville, who used it in the 1580s; readings from Greek myron, a sweet oil or myrrh, and from a reversal of Mary have both been offered. Myra in Lycia is a separate place name.

Myrah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2016, with 51 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Myrah went to 32 girls in 2025, but Mira, Myra and Mirah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,403, which makes it the 238th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,114 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,146 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 50,227 for Myrah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
