The story of Mirah
The double sense of mir is not a coincidence in Russian but a real feature of the word, and it shaped how the language talks about both ideas: the peasant commune was the mir, the whole world was the mir, and peace was the mir. Tolstoy's novel is War and Peace, but the old orthography distinguished two spellings of the word, and the question of which he intended has been argued for a century — the consensus is peace. In names the element is very old and very productive across the Slavic languages, usually in second position: Vladimir, ruler of the world or of peace; Casimir, one who destroys peace; Miroslav, peace and glory. The American figures for Mirah peak in 1920.

Contested — Slavic "peace, world", or Hebrew Mira from Miriam
Several unrelated sources produce this spelling. Slavic mir means peace and also world, and appears in Vladimir, Casimir and Miroslav. Hebrew and Yiddish Mira is a familiar form of Miriam or a Latin borrowing from mirus, wonderful. Sanskrit and Hindi Mira names the sixteenth-century poet-saint Mirabai. Arabic amīra, a princess, gives Mirah in some families. The record does not distinguish them.

About 1 girl in 1,146 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Mirah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
