Its appearance on the American girls' list is recent, peaking in 2020.

The story of Montgomery
Roger de Montgomerie was one of the great magnates of the Norman conquest, given the earldom of Shrewsbury and vast holdings on the Welsh border; the castle and county of Montgomery in Wales carry his name, and the Treaty of Montgomery in 1267 was signed there. The surname spread through Britain, was prominent in Scotland through the Earls of Eglinton, and crossed to America and Ireland. Montgomery, Alabama, is named for an American general. Its use as a given name is modern, mostly male, and its girls' use follows the general pattern of long surname names crossing over, helped by the short form Monty and by the softer Momo.
Meaning
Gomeric's hill
The place is Sainte-Foy-de-Montgomery in Normandy, and the name joins French mont, 'hill', to a Germanic personal name usually given as Gomeric or Gumaric — from guma, 'man', and ric, 'power, ruler'. So the whole is the hill belonging to a man called Gomeric. That structure, a Latin or French topographical word plus a Germanic personal name, is characteristic of Norman place names and reflects exactly who was doing the naming.

The Tiasia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Montgomery's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tiasia climbed just as high around 1997, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tiasia's path sketches the road Montgomery is walking now.
Montgomery sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Monty and Momo are both usable short forms with very different registers.
- The Norman history behind it is genuinely documented and easy to tell.
- A long formal name gives a bearer real range between formal and informal use.
- Four syllables is long for everyday use, so a short form is effectively required.
- It is far more common on boys, so forms will often assume male.
- The second syllable is regularly mispronounced on first reading.
