Mireille
Feminine
Mireille was invented to save a language. Frederic Mistral wrote Mireio in Provencal in 1859, a long poem in a tongue that French policy was actively suppressing, and it won him the Nobel Prize in 1904. He appears to have made the heroine's name himself, and it is now a standard French name.

The story of Mireille
Occitan was the literary language of the troubadours and by the nineteenth century had been reduced to a set of spoken dialects with no standard and no official standing; French schooling treated it as a patois to be eliminated. Mistral and six others founded the Felibrige in 1854 to reverse that, standardizing a spelling, compiling a dictionary and producing literature. Mireio was the movement's central work: twelve cantos about a farm girl and a basket-maker, published with a facing French translation, and it made Occitan visible across Europe. Gounod set it as an opera in 1864. Mistral shared the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature and spent the money on a museum. The name spread into French, then across the Francophone world, and is now used by people who have never heard of the poem or the language it was written to defend.

Not established
Mireille is the French form of the Provencal Mireio, the title character of Frederic Mistral's poem of 1859. Mistral connected it to the Occitan verb mirar, to admire or behold, and to the name Miriam, but the derivation is his own and the name is not attested before him. It peaks in the American data in 1969.
