Where it comes from

The story of Milka

Melekh is one of the most widely shared words in the Semitic languages and it turns up everywhere. Malik is the Arabic. Melchizedek is my king is righteous. Abimelech is my father is king. And Moloch, the god associated in the Hebrew Bible with child sacrifice, is very likely the same word with the vowels of a word meaning shame deliberately substituted by scribes who did not want to say the name properly — a device used more than once in the text. Milcah is the plain feminine, and she is one of the named women of Genesis, listed with her family in a genealogy that also produces Rebecca.

Meaning

queen

Hebrew Milcah, from melekh, king, giving a feminine form meaning queen. She appears in Genesis as Abraham's niece and the grandmother of Rebecca. A separate Slavic Milka, a diminutive of names built on mil, dear, reaches the same spelling from a different direction.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Semitic meaning traceable across four ancient languages.
  • Five letters and two syllables, with nothing hard in either.
  • It is a real name in both Hebrew and Slavic tradition, which is unusual.
What to consider
  • It is a very well known European chocolate brand, and that will be the first association for many people.
  • The stress differs between Hebrew and Slavic use, so two sayings are current.
  • Milca, Mylka and Milkah are all recorded, so the spelling will be given.
