Where it comes from

The story of Mihir

Mithra was an Indo-Iranian god of covenants and of the sun, and his name spread in both directions from the shared Indo-Iranian past — into Sanskrit as Mitra and, later and separately, back as the loanword mihira. Varahamihira, a sixth-century Indian astronomer, carried it. The name is used across India, particularly in the west and in Bengal, and reaches American records with families from those regions.

Meaning

the sun

From Sanskrit mihira, the sun, borrowed from the Middle Persian mihr, which named both the sun and the god Mithra; the same root gives the Persian names Mehr and Mehrdad.

Mihir sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 82 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning that is concrete and easy to explain to a child.
  • A documented Indo-Iranian journey behind it, which is genuinely interesting.
  • Five letters and two syllables, short by the standards of Sanskrit names.
What to consider
  • The h in the middle disappears in fast English speech.
  • The first vowel is unsettled between MIH and MY in American English.
  • Mihir, Mihira and Meher are all in use and relatives may prefer different ones.
