Where it comes from

The story of Mercedez

The Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy was founded in Barcelona in 1218 with a specific job: raising money and traveling to North Africa to buy back Christians held as slaves. Its members took a fourth vow, to give themselves up as hostages if that was what a ransom required. The Spanish word merced, from the Latin for wages, named the payment, and the Marian title came from the work. The car is a separate branch of the same name: an Austrian businessman named a series of Daimler models after his daughter Mercedes Jellinek in 1900, and the marque took her name permanently. So the word behind both is a commercial one, and the mercy it now suggests in English arrived long after the money.

Meaning

Latin merces, wages or payment

From the Spanish title Maria de las Mercedes, Mary of the Ransoms, referring to Our Lady of Mercy, patroness of the Mercedarian order. Merced comes from Latin merces, a payment or wage, and only later acquired the sense of mercy. Mercedez is an American respelling; its peak is 1993.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mercedez went to 9 girls in 2025, but Mercedes is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 159, which makes it the 801st most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,306 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 10,109 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Mercedez itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
