Our reading is that Mera is the clearest example in this rank range of what film does to a name that print cannot. The character existed for fifty-six years and generated almost no births. Then a film released in December 2018 put her in front of a global audience, and the name appears in the American data the following year at its highest point ever. Books produce slow, small, decades-long effects; television produces medium ones; a wide cinema release produces a single sharp year. The shape of the curve identifies the medium. What makes Mera an unusually clean case is that the name had no prior life at all in the United States, so there is no background to subtract. Every birth is attributable, which almost never happens.
