Marylyn
Feminine
English is the only major European language that made Mary out of Maria. Everywhere else it is Maria or Marie or Mariya. English took the French Marie, shifted the vowel, and produced a form ending in a y that no other language has — which is why Mary looks so plain and is so local.

The story of Marylyn
Irish did something no other language did with the name: it kept two. Muire is reserved for the Virgin alone and is never given to a child; Maire is the ordinary name every other Mary carries. The distinction is still observed. Several other Catholic countries reached the problem differently — Spanish gave the name to everyone but attached a title, so a woman is Maria del Carmen or Maria del Pilar and is called by the second half. The English road was simpler and stranger: Mary became so ordinary that it stopped signaling anything at all, and by the twentieth century American parents were extending it with endings, which is where Marylyn, Marilyn and Maryann come from.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Maria has no established meaning despite two thousand years of proposals: bitterness, beloved, rebellion and a drop of the sea have all been offered and none has been shown. The -lyn ending is a twentieth-century American suffix and carries none either, so neither half of this name means anything demonstrable.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Marylyn went to 7 girls in 2025, but Marilyn, Marilynn and Marylynn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 431, which makes it the 566th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,366 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,729 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Marylyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Oleta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marylyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oleta climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oleta's path sketches the road Marylyn is walking now.
Marylyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
