The story of Marvella
Merfyn Frych ruled Gwynedd until his death around 844 and founded the dynasty that produced Rhodri the Great, so the name is genuinely royal in Welsh terms. It reached English through the surname Mervin and Marvin, and by the time it became a common American given name in the early twentieth century nothing Welsh remained attached to it. What did attach was the English word marvel, which sounds close enough that most people assume a connection, and the feminine forms make the assumption visible: Marvella and Marvelle look as though they were built from marvelous. They were built from a Welsh king's name instead. The genuine word marvel comes from Latin mirabilia, wonders, and gives Miranda and admire, none of which is related to this name at all.
