Margeaux
Feminine · “pearl”
Margaux is a village in Bordeaux and one of the great wine estates of the world, and the spelling exists because of that: Margot is the ordinary French name, and Margaux is the wine. Behind both is Marguerite, which is French for a daisy and, further back, Greek for a pearl.

The story of Margeaux
Marguerite was among the great names of medieval France, and Margot has been its everyday form for centuries. The commune of Margaux in the Medoc gave its name to a first-growth estate, and the spelling with the -aux ending belongs to the place rather than to the name. An American actress adopted it in the nineteen-seventies, saying her parents had been drinking the wine the night she was conceived, and the spelling entered American naming from there.
Meaning
pearl
Through Marguerite from Latin margarita and Greek margarites, a pearl. French uses the same word for the daisy, which is why the flower and the gem sit inside one name. Margot is the traditional pet form and Margaux the estate's spelling.

The Anthea test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Margeaux's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anthea climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anthea's path sketches the road Margeaux is walking now.
