Maleigha
Feminine · “the Hawaiian form of Maria”
Maleigha takes a Hawaiian-derived name and writes it with an Old English digraph. The -eigh- of Leigh, Haleigh and Ashleigh comes from the Anglo-Saxon leah, a woodland clearing; here it lands in the middle of Malia, which came from Maria by way of nineteenth-century Hawaiian phonology. The two have nothing to do with each other. Its peak is 2009.

The story of Maleigha
The -eigh- digraph is genuinely old. It represents the Old English leah, a clearing in woodland, and it survives in hundreds of English place names and surnames — Ashleigh, Burleigh, Hadleigh, Leigh itself. Modern American naming detached it from that history and began using it as a decorative spelling for the long-a and long-e sounds anywhere in a name: Kayleigh, Haleigh, Ryleigh, Maleigha. What makes this particular case striking is the distance traveled. A Saxon woodland clearing and a Hawaiian rendering of a Hebrew name meet in one word, and neither contributes anything to the other.

the Hawaiian form of Maria — Mary
The likeliest ancestor is Malia, which is Maria rendered through Hawaiian sound rules — Hawaiian has no r and no s, so missionary translators substituted systematically. Maria itself descends from Hebrew Miryam, whose meaning has never been settled. The -eigh- spelling contributes nothing: it is an English orthographic borrowing from the -leigh place-name ending, applied here for visual effect. Whether a given Maleigha descends from Malia or was built by ear cannot be shown.

Three syllables, stress in the middle. A second saying, muh-LEE-uh, follows Malia more closely and is also heard. The -eigh- gives English readers no reliable instruction, which is why both circulate.

The Revonda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maleigha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Revonda climbed just as high around 1962, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Revonda's path sketches the road Maleigha is walking now.

The trade-off
- Mal, Mali and Leigh are all usable short forms with different characters.
- It descends, probably, from one of the most widely used names in the world.
- It is rare enough in this spelling that a bearer is unlikely to share it.
- The -eigh- digraph has no reliable English reading, so the vowel is guessed.
- Malia, Malea and Maleah are all more common and will be assumed.
- The spelling is long for a name of three syllables and will be misspelled routinely.
