Malaysia is a name from 1963. The country was assembled that year out of Malaya, Singapore and two Borneo states, and needed a word for the whole; European geographers had been using Malaysia loosely for the archipelago since the nineteenth century, and it was taken up. The people and the language are far older than the country.

Where it comes from

The story of Malaysha

Malay was the trade language of maritime Southeast Asia for centuries before any European arrived — the language merchants used between the Malay peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the spice islands, spoken as a second language across an enormous area. That is why it became the national language of two countries and is understood by something like three hundred million people. The word Melayu is older than any state that has used it and its origin is not settled. The country name is a nineteenth-century European coinage applied in the twentieth to a federation, and the American name is a further step again: the sound taken up for its own sake.

No source has been established for this spelling. It sits closest to Malaysia, the country name, and to the Malaisha and Malaya family of American coinages. Melayu, the word behind Malaysia, names a people and a language and is of uncertain origin itself.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three open syllables with a regular stress that strangers place correctly.
  • Three short forms, two of which are names in their own right.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English.
What to consider
  • It is one syllable from the name of a country, and people will hear that.
  • Malaysia, Malaisha and Maleysha are all in use, so the spelling will need giving.
  • There is no documented meaning behind it.
