Graziella comes from a French novel about an Italian girl. Lamartine published it in 1852, drawing on his own youth near Naples, and the book made the name popular in Italy, where it had barely existed before. A French poet named a fictional Italian and Italy adopted her name as its own.

Where it comes from

The story of Graziella

Lamartine had spent time in the Bay of Naples as a young man and the novel is a lightly fictionalised account of an attachment to a local girl who dies after he leaves. It was published as part of his memoirs, was enormously popular, and was translated widely. Its effect on Italian naming is a good instance of a foreign book creating a native fashion: Italians read a French novel about themselves and took the heroine's name, which the author appears to have constructed from grazia rather than borrowed. Something similar happened with Fiammetta from Boccaccio and with Ophelia, which Shakespeare took from an Italian source and English readers took back. The direction of travel matters less than the mechanism: a name that exists first in a book, and then in a population, and only afterwards acquires a history.

Meaning

Italian grazia, grace

From Italian grazia, from Latin gratia, favor or grace, with the diminutive ending -ella. The name was rare in Italy before Alphonse de Lamartine's novel Graziella, published in 1852, which is set among fishing families on Procida and Ischia and was widely read across Europe. It peaks in the American data in 1971, arriving with Italian American families.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Graziella went to 12 girls in 2025, but Graciela and Graciella are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 132, which makes it the 828th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,534 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,176 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Graziella itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and entirely positive.
  • Ella gives a short form that is a major name in its own right.
  • It has a documented literary origin with an author and a date.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is long for American use.
  • The Italian zi sound is difficult for English speakers.
  • Graciela is the more common Spanish form and is said quite differently.
