The story of Macee
Macy's first store failed several times before the New York shop succeeded. He had tried and closed four dry goods businesses in Massachusetts before opening on Sixth Avenue, and the first day's takings were eleven dollars. What made the enterprise work was a set of innovations that are now standard: fixed prices marked on the goods rather than haggled, cash sales rather than credit, and money-back guarantees. He also advertised heavily and used the star from his arm as a trademark. The Thanksgiving parade began in 1924 and the store became a fixture of American commercial life. The name behind all of it is Norman French and refers to a village in France, having reached England with the Conquest and America with the settlers, several centuries before it went on a shopping bag.
