Raychel
Feminine · “ewe”
Raychel respells the front and keeps the back, which is the reverse of the usual pattern. The ch in this name is not an English ch at all: it stands for a Hebrew consonant that English does not have, a sound made at the back of the throat, and every English speaker says it as a plain k instead. The spelling has been kept for four hundred years to represent a sound nobody uses.

The story of Raychel
Hebrew has a consonant made far back in the throat, and when the Bible was translated into Greek there was no letter for it, so the translators used the letter chi, which stood for a sound made in roughly the same place. Latin transliterated the Greek as ch. English inherited the Latin. And English has never had the sound at all, so it says a plain k and has done for as long as the name has been in the language. The spelling is therefore a fossil: two letters preserving a Greek solution to a Hebrew problem in a language that has neither. The same thing happened to Michael, to Zachary and to a dozen other names, and it is why so many biblical names have a ch that is said as a k.
Meaning
ewe
The Hebrew word means a female sheep, and the reading is settled and unusually concrete. Animal names are common in the oldest Hebrew layer and rarely come with an explanation attached. The respelled front changes nothing about the sense; it writes the first syllable the way it is said rather than the way the Hebrew transliteration has always written it.
How the name formed
- A Hebrew word for a ewe, used as a name
- Transliterated through Greek and Latin with a ch
- Rachel in continuous English use
- Raychel, respelling the front and keeping the fossil

Two syllables, stress on the first. The ch is said as a plain ch in English despite representing a Hebrew throat consonant; the Spanish form solves the problem by writing a q instead, which is closer to the original.

Fashion outlook
Raychel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spelling makes the first syllable unambiguous, which the standard form does not.
- Ray, Rae and Chel are three very different short forms from one certificate.
- It carries one of the oldest continuously used names in the Western world.
- Rachel is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
- The respelling is visible enough that people will comment on it.
- The meaning is a ewe, which a child who looks it up will find slightly deflating.
