Lynna

Feminine · “Welsh llyn”

Lynn was a Welsh word for a lake, then a place, then a surname, then a boy's name, then a girl's name. Lynna is the last step: an -a added to a name that was already read as female, so the ending does no grammatical work at all. It is decoration on a job already finished, and it peaks in 1951 at the height of the Lynn wave.

Where it comes from

The story of Lynna

The Welsh initial ll is a sound English does not have, a voiceless l made by breathing round the sides of the tongue, and English speakers have always simplified it to plain l. That simplification is what turned llyn into Lynn. The name spent the nineteenth century as a surname and a boy's name, crossed to girls in the 1920s, and by the late 1940s was one of the most heavily used middle names in the country, which is where the -a forms come from. A middle name that appears on millions of certificates eventually gets used as a first name, and once it is a first name people begin to embellish it. Lynna, Lynne, Lynnette and Linda all belong to that moment. The doubled n in Lynna is not Welsh either: it is the English rule that a doubled consonant keeps the preceding vowel short.

Meaning

Welsh llyn, lake

Lynn descends from Welsh llyn, a lake or pool, through place names such as King's Lynn in Norfolk, which took its name from a tidal pool. From the place came a surname, from the surname a given name. The final -a of Lynna is a Latin feminine ending applied in English, with no source in Welsh, where the language marks gender differently and not with a final vowel.

Two syllables, stress on the first, short i. It is close enough to Lena and Linda that both are heard as mishearings, and the doubled n does nothing audible.

Lynna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1963, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lynna went to 13 girls in 2025, but Lina, Lyna and Linah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 560, which makes it the 482nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,403 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,870 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Lynna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
