Lydell can be read two ways and looks identical either way. It is a plausible respelling of Liddell, an old English surname taken from a river valley in the border country. It is also a perfectly ordinary product of the American habit of building names from a front syllable and the ending -dell. Nothing in the letters chooses, and both explanations have been true for different families.

Where it comes from

The story of Lydell

Liddesdale on the border was reiver country, and the families who came out of it carried the valley's name away with them; Liddell has been an English and Scottish surname for many centuries. Meanwhile, American naming through the twentieth century made steady use of -dell and -ell endings on short front syllables, producing names that sound established because the ending is a real English word. Lydell sits exactly where those two streams cross, which is why the record cannot separate them and why an honest account has to hold both.

Meaningscholars disagree

the valley of the loud river

If the name is Liddell, the meaning is documented and pleasant: from the Old English words for loud and for a valley, describing the fast-running Liddel Water on the Anglo-Scottish border. If it was built from Ly- and -dell on the pattern of Rondell and Wendell, then no meaning attaches beyond the ordinary English word for a small wooded valley.

ly-DELL

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which the doubled l signals. Some families say LY-dell with the weight in front instead; both are current, and the name has to be introduced rather than simply read.

Lydell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1978, with 78 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ending is a real English word, so the name never sounds assembled even though it may be.
  • Dell is available as a short form and sounds complete.
  • Six letters, two syllables, and nothing that gives an English reader trouble.
What to consider
  • Lydell, Lidell, Liddell and Lydel all appear in records, so the spelling has to be dictated.
  • The stress placement is unsettled, and a child will hear the name both ways.
  • Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy, though -ell endings read as feminine to many American ears.
