Lucian
Masculine · “Of light”
Lucian is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 14,469 boys against 32 girls since 1880.
Lucian is the English form of the Latin Lucianus, built on Lucius and the Latin word for light. It has been read aloud in English for centuries as the name of Lucian of Samosata, the second-century satirist whose comic dialogues were school reading for generations. In the mouth it is two or three unhurried syllables ending in a soft -an, which is why it shortens so easily and travels so well.

The story of Lucian
The root is Latin lux, 'light', which gave the old Roman personal name Lucius, and Lucius in turn gave the family name Lucianus. Greek speakers wrote it Loukianos — the form carried by Lucian of Samosata, the second-century writer of satirical dialogues in Greek, whose work kept the name in circulation among educated readers long after Rome. Christian martyrs and saints named Lucianus carried it into the medieval church calendars, from which it spread into French as Lucien, Italian and Spanish as Luciano, and Romanian as Lucian, spelled exactly as English spells it. English adopted the Latin form directly, which is why Lucian looks classical on the page rather than translated.

The trade-off
- The meaning is not in dispute: Latin lux, 'light', through Lucius.
- Recognizable in French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Romanian, and spelled identically to the standard Romanian form.
- A documented record stretching from Roman naming practice to the present, with no gap where it fell out of use entirely.
- Familiar to English speakers through the Luc-/Luke family of names without sharing their crowded top ranks.
- Two pronunciations circulate — LOO-shun and LOO-see-un — so he will likely correct people, or answer happily to both.
- It sits very close to Lucien, Luciano, Lucius, Lucas and Luca. Expect the spelling to be confirmed at every appointment and the wrong cousin-name written down sometimes.
- Some people hear an echo of Lucifer, which shares the same Latin root for light. It rarely comes up more than once, but it does come up.
