The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Lucian
Of light; light-bringing
Lucianus is a derivative of the Roman name Lucius, from Latin lux, 'light'.
Lucius → Lucianus → Loukianos → Lucien → Lucian
How it traveled
The root is Latin lux, 'light', which gave the old Roman personal name Lucius, and Lucius in turn gave the family name Lucianus. Greek speakers wrote it Loukianos — the form carried by Lucian of Samosata, the second-century writer of satirical dialogues in Greek, whose work kept the name in circulation among educated readers long after Rome.
Mack
son of — from the Gaelic patronymic mac
Mack is the Gaelic word mac, "son," the element that opens surnames like MacDonald, MacGregor and Mackenzie. As a standalone given name it carries that word rather than a separate meaning of its own.
mac (Gaelic, "son") → MacDonald, Mackenzie and other Mac- surnames → Mac → Mack
How it traveled
The Gaelic mac, "son," built the patronymic surnames of Ireland and Scotland: MacDonald, son of Donald, and so on down the line. In English-speaking countries the prefix was clipped off and used as a familiar short form for anyone whose surname began that way, and from there it became a first name on its own.

Out loud, and in short
Lucian
LOO-shun
Also said LOO-see-un, with three syllables; both are established in English. Romanian speakers say LOO-chan, and the French Lucien is loo-SYEN.
- Luce — Informal short form; also heard for Lucius and Lucia.
- Lu — The shortest option, used at home more than at school.
- Luci — Informal; the spelling matters, as Lucy reads as a separate name.
- Ian — Taken from the end of the name; also a long-established given name in its own right.
Mack
MAK
One syllable, rhyming with back. It survives every English accent intact, and the spelling gives no one pause.
- Mac — The same name with the older spelling; used interchangeably in speech, and itself a standalone given name.
- Mackie — An informal diminutive, mostly within families.

The trade-offs, name by name
Lucian
Strengths
- The meaning is not in dispute: Latin lux, 'light', through Lucius.
- Recognizable in French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Romanian, and spelled identically to the standard Romanian form.
- A documented record stretching from Roman naming practice to the present, with no gap where it fell out of use entirely.
To consider
- Two pronunciations circulate — LOO-shun and LOO-see-un — so he will likely correct people, or answer happily to both.
- It sits very close to Lucien, Luciano, Lucius, Lucas and Luca. Expect the spelling to be confirmed at every appointment and the wrong cousin-name written down sometimes.
- Some people hear an echo of Lucifer, which shares the same Latin root for light. It rarely comes up more than once, but it does come up.
Mack
Strengths
- One syllable, four letters, spelled the way it sounds — rarely misheard and almost never misspelled after the first telling.
- An unbroken presence in American records since the earliest official name counts, without ever becoming a crowded name.
- Works as a full legal name and as a natural short form for longer Mac- names such as Mackenzie.
To consider
- "Hey, Mack" was mid-century American shorthand for addressing a stranger, and older speakers may still hear that echo. It sits alongside "built like a Mack truck" as a familiar phrase rather than an unfamiliar name.
- Because it began as a clipped surname prefix, some people will assume it is short for something longer and ask what the full name is. There is no longer form to give unless you choose one.
- Mac and Mack are both in use, so expect to spell it now and then, and expect the other version on the occasional envelope.
