Mack
Masculine · Gaelic roots · “son of”
Mack is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 42,720 boys against 180 girls since 1880.
Mack began life as the piece of a name rather than the whole of it — the Gaelic mac, "son," the front end of a thousand Scottish and Irish surnames. Somewhere in English-speaking practice it broke loose and became a name in its own right, one syllable, spelled exactly as it sounds. It has been on the American record continuously since record-keeping began, never crowding a classroom, never disappearing either.

The story of Mack
The Gaelic mac, "son," built the patronymic surnames of Ireland and Scotland: MacDonald, son of Donald, and so on down the line. In English-speaking countries the prefix was clipped off and used as a familiar short form for anyone whose surname began that way, and from there it became a first name on its own. Twentieth-century American speech gave it a second life as a general form of address for a man whose name you did not know. It also stuck to two famous things built on other people's surnames: the trucks made by the Mack brothers, and "Mack the Knife," the English title given to Brecht and Weill's Mackie Messer.

About 1 boy in 1,596 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 2,557 for Mack itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- One syllable, four letters, spelled the way it sounds — rarely misheard and almost never misspelled after the first telling.
- An unbroken presence in American records since the earliest official name counts, without ever becoming a crowded name.
- Works as a full legal name and as a natural short form for longer Mac- names such as Mackenzie.
- Rooted in a real Gaelic word, mac, that still opens surnames across Ireland and Scotland.
- "Hey, Mack" was mid-century American shorthand for addressing a stranger, and older speakers may still hear that echo. It sits alongside "built like a Mack truck" as a familiar phrase rather than an unfamiliar name.
- Because it began as a clipped surname prefix, some people will assume it is short for something longer and ask what the full name is. There is no longer form to give unless you choose one.
- Mac and Mack are both in use, so expect to spell it now and then, and expect the other version on the occasional envelope.
- It is strongly represented among the oldest generations alive today, which means a child may meet the name mostly on grandparents and on trucks before meeting it on a peer.
