The story of Louden
Loudoun is a district and a hill in Ayrshire, and it gave a Scottish title and a surname. John Campbell, fourth Earl of Loudoun, was appointed commander-in-chief in North America in 1756 during the French and Indian War and is remembered chiefly for inertia; Benjamin Franklin compared him to a figure on a signpost who points the way and never moves. Loudoun County, Virginia, established in 1757, is named for him, and so is Fort Loudoun. The given name follows the American place and surname rather than the Scottish hill, and its best year in United States records is 2008.

Not established
Loudoun in Ayrshire has no secure derivation; proposals include a Brittonic or Gaelic element meaning a beacon or a hill and a personal name. The English adjective loud has nothing to do with it. The spelling Louden with an e is a modern simplification, and it also functions as a phonetic respelling of the American surname Lowden.
