The story of Louanna
Two-part calling names were the American norm through the nineteenth century, especially in the South, and they were spoken as a unit: not Mary, but Mary Ann, every time. Written practice lagged behind speech. Registers show the same child as Lou Anna, Lou-Anna, Louanna and Luanna in different documents, and eventually the fused spelling became the legal one. The first element is the more traveled of the two: Louis is Frankish Hlodwig, the name of the Merovingian king the French call Clovis and the Germans Ludwig, and of eighteen French kings after him. The second, Anna, is Hannah, the mother of Samuel. A name that looks like a soft invention of the 1880s is in fact a Frankish war-name and a Hebrew one, joined by an American speech habit.
