The story of Lorne
The Marquess of Lorne married Queen Victoria's daughter Louise and served as Governor General of Canada, and the couple's tour of the young dominion left names scattered across it — a province was named for her, and boys were named for him. That is why Lorne has been a familiar Canadian man's name for well over a century while remaining a curiosity in the United States, where it arrives mostly through Canadian families and Canadian television. Its American shape follows a mid-century wave rather than any older tradition.
