Lorianne
Feminine · “Latin laurus”
Lori is a clip of Laura, and Laura is a laurel tree. The Romans crowned generals and poets with bay leaves because the tree was sacred to Apollo, god of prophecy and poetry, and because bay does not wither quickly. That is why a name for a shrub came to mean victory, and why laureate still means a prize.

The story of Lorianne
The laurel wreath is one of the longest-lived symbols in Europe. Apollo's tree, according to the myth Ovid tells, was a woman who asked to be changed into one; the Pythian games awarded laurel to their winners; Roman triumphs used it; medieval universities crowned graduates with it, which is where baccalaureate comes from, and where poet laureate comes from too. The English name Laura arrives by a different route, through Italian, and specifically through Petrarch, who addressed three hundred and sixty-six poems to a woman called Laura between 1327 and 1368 and made the name a literary property for the next five centuries. The second element of Lorianne is much simpler: -anne became the standard second half of American double names in the mid twentieth century, and appears in that position only, never at the front. Lorianne peaks in 1963.
Meaning
Latin laurus, the bay laurel, with Anne
Laura is from Latin laurus, the bay tree, whose leaves formed the victor's wreath. Lori is a twentieth-century American short form of it. Anne is from Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace, through Greek and Latin. Lorianne joins the two, following the mid-century American habit of building a compound from a short form and a one-syllable second name. It is not a name in any European tradition and dates from the 1940s onward.
