Long
Masculine · “dragon”
Long is a dragon. In Vietnamese and in Chinese the character behind it names the creature that stands for imperial power and for water and weather — nothing like the hoarding, fire-breathing beast of European stories. When a Vietnamese emperor moved his capital to the site of modern Hanoi, he called it Thăng Long, the ascending dragon, and the city carried that name for eight hundred years.

The story of Long
Names taken from the dragon are old and highly regarded across the Chinese cultural sphere, and Vietnam has used them for as long as it has had written records. Thăng Long was the capital's name from the eleventh century until the nineteenth, and the association with kingship never entirely left the word. In American records the name appears after 1975 in real numbers, carried by families resettled from Vietnam, and its shape in the data has nothing to do with fashion — it is the trace of an evacuation and the decades of family reunification that followed.
Meaning
dragon
From the character read long in Vietnamese and lóng in Mandarin. The East Asian dragon is a benevolent figure associated with rivers, rain and imperial authority, and it has no relation to the dragons of Western myth beyond the word English uses to translate it.
Pronouncing Long
LAWNG
One syllable. Vietnamese carries a tone on it that English cannot show and most English speakers do not hear, and the vowel is a little further back than the English adjective. In practice, in America, the two are said the same way.

The Dorman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Long's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dorman climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dorman's path sketches the road Long is walking now.
Long sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and four letters, which fits every form and survives every accent.
- The character behind it is among the most admired in East Asian naming, with a documented imperial history.
- It is spelled with letters an English reader already knows, so nothing has to be taught.
- It collides head-on with an extremely common English adjective, and the puns are unavoidable and endless.
- Written in the Roman alphabet the name loses its tone and its character, and with them most of what it carries.
- In English-speaking settings it reads as a word rather than a name, and introductions take an extra beat.
