This is not a man at a door. The first element is Old English deor, which meant precious or beloved, and the name is a compound describing somebody dear rather than somebody standing in a doorway. The resemblance to the English word is an accident of eight hundred years of sound change.

Where it comes from

The story of Dorman

That element split into two modern words and one of them narrowed drastically. Old English deor with a short vowel meant any wild animal — the general word for a beast — and it has come down as deer, meaning one particular family of them; the word with a long vowel meant precious, and gave us dear. German kept the general sense in Tier, which still means any animal. So English took a word for all wild creatures and spent a thousand years pointing it at a single species, which is what happens when one animal matters more than the others to the people doing the talking.

Meaning

beloved man

Two Old English elements, the first meaning dear and the second man. The compound was in use as a personal name before the Conquest and passed into surnames afterwards.

Dorman sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1930, with 59 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dorman sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is warm and rather unexpected once explained.
  • It is genuinely rare with no competing associations.
  • The spelling and the sound agree completely.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a compound about doors, which is not what it is.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
  • Neither short form is much use, so the full name does the work.
