The story of Lolita
The name's own root is grief. Spanish Catholic naming took Marian titles and made given names of them, so Dolores comes from Nuestra Senora de los Dolores, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Mercedes, Consuelo, Pilar and Soledad were formed the same way. Dolores shortens to Lola and Lola takes the -ita ending, so Lolita is two diminutives deep and reads in Spanish as a child's version of a solemn devotional name. What happened afterwards is one of the sharpest curves in the records. Publicity of any kind lifts a name at first, so the figures rise through the early 1960s, and then the association hardened and the name disappeared, which is what happens when a book supplies not a character but a category.
