Our reading is that the doubled final consonant is an underdescribed device in American naming and worth naming. When a boys' name crosses to girls, parents want a written form that signals the crossing, since the spoken name carries no signal at all. The standard move is to add a vowel: Ryan gives Ryann, Devin gives Devyn, Charlie gives Charlee. The alternative is to double the last consonant, which adds a letter without adding a syllable: Logann, Jordann, Camm. Both work for the same reason, which is that an unnecessary letter reads as ornament, and ornament in American naming reads as female. Neither changes the pronunciation. What they change is the moment a teacher reads a class list and has to guess, and that moment is the whole point of the exercise.
