Where it comes from

The story of Joclyn

Jocelyn crossed to England with the Normans as a man's name and became a woman's name in the twentieth century. Joclyn is a modern shortening of it, and nothing in the record gives it a story of its own. The name's great modern story belongs to the full spelling: in 1967 Jocelyn Bell, a graduate student at Cambridge, noticed a tiny repeating signal in the chart paper from a radio telescope she had helped build, and it turned out to be the first known pulsar. The 1974 Nobel Prize for the work went to her supervisor, and decades later she gave away a large science prize of her own to fund graduate students who are rarely given the chance she had.

Fashion outlook

Joclyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds like Jocelyn, a name with a long history and a well-known modern bearer.
  • Shorter on the page than the usual spelling.
  • Comes with Jo and Joss as ready short forms.
What to consider
  • Without the e, the c reads as a k to many people, so expect 'JOCK-lin' on a first reading.
  • Jocelyn is the spelling most people know, so this one will be corrected often.
  • It has no history apart from Jocelyn, which matters only to families who wanted a distinct name rather than a distinct spelling.
