Lexington is the only -ington name Americans give to girls, and the reason is the front of the word, not the end. Washington, Wellington, Harrington and Remington all read as male; Lexington begins with the syllable of Lexi and Alexis, and that is enough to flip it.

Where it comes from

The story of Lexington

The battle of 19 April 1775 made Lexington a national word, and American place names of that kind have supplied given names steadily — Austin, Dakota, Carolina, Savannah, Brooklyn, Camden. What is unusual here is the sex. Almost every -ington name in American use is male, and Lexington is not, which is a clean demonstration that the first syllable of a name does more work than the last. Lexi entered wide use as a short form of Alexis and Alexandra in the 1990s; by the 2000s the syllable itself read as feminine, and a longer name beginning with it inherited that reading regardless of what followed. The figures peak in 2014.

Old English "the farmstead of Leaxa's people"

The Massachusetts town was named in 1713, most likely after Laxton in Nottinghamshire, formerly Lexington, whose name is a personal name plus -inga-, of the people of, plus tūn, a farm. The first element is uncertain. As a modern American given name the historical meaning plays no part; the name is heard as an extension of Lex and Lexi, which come from Alexander and Alexis, from Greek alexein, to defend.
