Lenard
Masculine · “brave as a lion”
Lenard is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 9,997 boys against 7 girls since 1880.
Lenard is Leonard with the lion taken out of the spelling but not out of the sound. English says the standard version in two syllables anyway — LEN-erd, not LEE-oh-nard — so this version simply writes what everyone was saying. It is one of the tidier respellings in American records, because it corrects the spelling toward the pronunciation rather than away from it.

The story of Lenard
The name spread across Europe because of a sixth-century Frankish hermit, Leonard of Noblac, who became the patron saint of prisoners and of women in childbirth — an unusual pairing, and one that made his shrine in Limousin a major destination. Crusaders returning from captivity carried his cult north, and by the twelfth century Leonard was in use across France, Germany and England. The single-e spelling appears in English and American records from early on, always as a minority version, kept alive by families writing the name the way they said it.
Meaning
brave as a lion
From the Germanic elements lewo, a lion, borrowed into Frankish from Latin, and hardu, brave or hardy. It is one of a large family of medieval names built from an animal and a quality, and the combination was meant as a compliment to the man, not a prediction about a child.

The Rollin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lenard's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rollin climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rollin's path sketches the road Lenard is walking now.
Lenard sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling matches the American pronunciation more closely than the standard version does.
- Len, Lenny and Leo are all available, which gives real range from childhood to adult life.
- The name has a documented medieval history and a saint attached to a memorable pair of causes.
- Leonard is the standard spelling and will be substituted on most documents.
- It belongs unmistakably to an older American generation, though that generation's names are returning.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy; the few girls in the record will meet a firm assumption.
