The story of Lawson
Medieval English shortened names hard and then built new names out of the shortenings, and Lawson, Lawrie and Larkin all come off Lawrence. Surnames fixed in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and caught those pet forms in them, which is why so many English surnames are built on names nobody has used as a first name for six hundred years. Lawson reached America and became a given name there in the nineteenth century; its use for daughters is very recent.
Meaning
son of Law, a short form of Lawrence
Law is a documented medieval English pet form of Lawrence, alongside Larkin and Lolly, and Lawson is the patronymic surname from it. Lawrence itself is Latin Laurentius, 'of Laurentum', a town whose own name is generally connected to laurus, 'laurel'. The reading is documented at every step, though the laurel connection is a reading of a reading.

The Morgyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lawson's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Morgyn climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Morgyn's path sketches the road Lawson is walking now.
Lawson sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
