Where it comes from

The story of Morgyn

The name has an unexpected American life in the stable. Every Morgan horse alive descends from a single stallion owned by a Vermont singing teacher called Justin Morgan, a small, heavily built animal that outpulled and outran larger horses and passed his build to every foal he sired — which is not how heredity usually works and made him famous. The breed took the owner's surname rather than the horse's own, which was Figure, and it became the first American breed of anything. So a Welsh name about the sea ended up describing a horse from New England, through one man, one animal and a set of qualities that turned out to be unusually heritable.

Sea circle, or sea born

The Welsh name joins a word for the sea to one that has been read as circle, bright or born. Which reading is right has been argued for a long time, and the respelling inherits the argument without adding to it.

Fashion outlook

Morgyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real Welsh name with a long history rather than a modern invention.
  • It works for either child and reads as deliberate rather than borrowed.
  • The sound is entirely familiar to American ears.
What to consider
  • Morgan is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it constantly.
  • In Wales the name belongs to men, which occasionally causes a double take.
  • The y changes nothing audible, so the distinction exists only on paper.
