The laurel wreath is still hanging around English. A poet laureate wears one. A baccalaureate is a laurel berry. Resting on your laurels is the wreath again. Laura is the Latin for that tree, and Laury is Laura's pet form written with a y.

The story of Laury
The laurel was Apollo's tree, and the myth explains why: Daphne, fleeing him, is turned into one, and he takes its leaves for his crown because he cannot have her. Rome gave wreaths of it to generals and to winners of contests, and medieval universities carried the habit forward into the words we still use for degrees. Laura appears as a woman's name in Italy in the Middle Ages and spread across Europe from there, gathering short forms as it went: Laurie, Lori, Lolly, Laury. The y ending is the English pet-name suffix, and this spelling has always been used for both girls and boys, because Laurie serves Laurence as readily as Laura.
Meaning
laurel
From Latin laurus, the bay laurel, whose leaves were woven into crowns for victors and later for poets and scholars. Laura is the feminine adjective form. The Greek for the same tree is daphne, which is also a name, so Laura and Daphne are the same idea in two languages.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Oretha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Laury's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Oretha climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Oretha's path sketches the road Laury is walking now.
Laury sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Latin meaning attached to a documented and cheerful custom.
- Laura sits behind it as a formal option for anyone who wants one.
- It serves either child, since it is also the pet form of Laurence.
- Laurie and Lori are both commoner spellings and this one will be corrected toward them.
- It is a pet form used as a full name, which reads as informal on paper.
- The very few boys given this spelling will be read as girls, though Laurie has a long history as a man's name.
