Lawrence does not mean laurel. It means from Laurentum, a town in Latium that the Romans said was named for its laurels — so the name is a place, and the tree is one step further back. The saint everybody knows was Laurentius, the man from that town.

Where it comes from

The story of Lauri

Laurentum barely survives — it was an ancient Latin town near the coast, more important in legend than in fact, and Virgil makes it the seat of the king Aeneas has to deal with. The adjective built on it became a Roman name and then a Christian one, and by the fourth century belonged to a deacon of Rome who was executed under Valerian. The gridiron story attached to him later. The name spread across Europe and produced Lorenzo, Laurent, Lars, Lauri and Lorcan, and English took the Laura family as its feminine, which is a separate line rather than a translation. Lauri sits between the two: a woman's pet form here and a man's full name in Finland.

Meaning

from Laurentum

Latin Laurentius, of Laurentum, a city south of Rome. The town's own name was connected by Roman writers with laurus, the laurel, though that may itself be a folk etymology. Lauri is the American pet form of Laura or Laurie; in Finland the same four letters are a man's name, the Finnish form of Lawrence.

Lauri sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 717 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lauri went to 7 girls in 2025, but Laury is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 15, which makes it the 945th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,987 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 107,151 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Lauri itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Latin origin traceable to a named place.
  • It serves either child, and the records show both.
  • Two syllables that everyone can say after hearing them once.
What to consider
  • Laurie and Lori are both commoner spellings of the same sound.
  • In Finland it is a man's name and a very ordinary one, which matters on international paperwork.
  • It is strongly represented among older generations and places the name in the last century.
