Lauralee

Petrarch saw a woman in a church in Avignon in 1327, never had her, and wrote three hundred and sixty-six poems about it. Her name was Laura, and he punned on it constantly — lauro is the laurel, l'aura is the breeze, l'auro is gold. The sonnet as Europe knows it comes out of that book.

The story of Lauralee
The Canzoniere is the most influential book of love poetry in European literature, and its central device is a woman who is never present. Petrarch worked the name in every direction he could reach — the laurel crown he was himself awarded, the breeze, the gold of her hair — and the puns are not decoration but the argument: the thing he wants keeps turning into something else. Every sonnet sequence in English for the next three hundred years is answering that book. The name went out with it into Italian, French, Spanish and English use, and the compound with -lee was made in America in the twentieth century, when almost any name could take that ending.
Meaning
laurel
From Latin laurus, the bay laurel. Laura is the feminine adjective form, and it was a name in Italy before Petrarch made it famous. The -lee ending is a twentieth-century American addition with no meaning of its own.

The Genevie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lauralee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genevie climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genevie's path sketches the road Lauralee is walking now.
Lauralee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
