Most naming elements can be traced. Prefixes such as La- and De- came from French surnames; endings such as -ell and -ette came from French diminutives; -iyah came from Arabic transliteration. The -quan ending resists all of that. It appears suddenly in the American record in the early 1980s, spreads fast, and has no obvious parent, which is genuinely unusual. What can be said is what it does: it puts a stressed syllable at the end of a name, ending it on a nasal, which English otherwise does mainly in borrowed words. That shape was in short supply and the ending filled the gap. Laquan is one of the earliest members of the family and its best year in United States records is 1991.
