Lamonte
Masculine · “law-man”
Lamonte looks French and is Norse. The Scottish surname Lamont comes from Old Norse logmadr, a law-man — a judge or lawspeaker in the Norse-Gaelic world of the western isles. The final e is an American addition that makes the name look like the French la monte, which it has never been. Its peak is 1972.

The story of Lamonte
The Lamonts were a substantial Argyll family descended from Ladhmann, a thirteenth-century figure whose name carries the Norse office; their lands were on Cowal and their history in the seventeenth century was violent. Scottish and Ulster-Scots emigration brought the surname to America in numbers. Its promotion to a given name is twentieth-century, and it was taken up strongly in African-American naming from the 1950s, alongside Lamar, Lavelle and Lorenzo. The added e in Lamonte belongs to that period and reflects a general preference for a fuller-looking spelling; it changes little about the sound.
Meaning
law-man; a lawspeaker or judge
Old Norse logmadr joins log, 'law', to madr, 'man', and named a real office: the lawspeaker who recited and interpreted the law at an assembly. In the Norse-Gaelic lordships of the Hebrides and Argyll the title passed into Gaelic as Laomann and produced the surname Lamont. The derivation is settled. The French reading — la monte, 'the mount' — is a folk etymology encouraged by the added e and has no historical basis.
